Social protest. Sensitive boy loves children and hates adults, but undergoes development through the novel and ends up a different person.
Stevenson, Robert Louis: The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886)
Multiple Personality Syndrome. Oprah watchers know the phenomenon well. First novel about dual personality. Themes like good versus evil, keeping evil in check, otherwise ending up with a lot of problems.
Scott Fitzgerald, F. : The Great Gatsby (1925)
Clashes of class. Nick Carraway tells the tale of Jay Gatsby; a rich neighbour. A group of people come together and later on (as befits a good soap series) intrigue and deceit evolve. Gatsby has got wealth, but he didn’t get the girl. Tries to relive the past. Drama in a pure sense.
Hill, Susan: I’m the King of the Castle (1970)
Young fatherless boy has to move with his mother, who’s a housekeeper. The boy that lives there doesn’t have a mother. Kingshaw and Hooper are forced to become friends, but the story turns out differently. Very moving and understandable since it’s about two young boys.
MacLaverty, Bernard: Cal (1983)
Young lad, lives in Ireland. Becomes unemployed and is sucked into IRA activities through an old friend from school. There’s some romance in it too and it’s good to read this book for your own intellectual development.
Ishiguro, Kazuo: the Remains of the Day (1989)
About a butler who serves for a Lord, who made some mistakes during WW II. About lost love and opportunities never taken. Beautifully written and for the real romantics amidst us.
Walker, Alice: the Color Purple (1982)
Diary of a girl who lives in the racially disadvantaged South of the USA. She can't read, can't be free and even conceives two kids from her father! Read up on her emancipation.
